Year of the Goat painting competition 2027An exhibition by the Audi Confucius Institute Ingolstadt
About the exhibition
To mark its tenth anniversary, the Audi Confucius Institute Ingolstadt invited everyone to paint, draw, collage or digitally illustrate the goat. Each person could submit one work in portrait format, with their own title and entirely without artificial intelligence.
Some wrote a chengyu into their picture, others looked for the goat in the mountains, in the garden or in a dream. There are fire goats, a goat of the five elements, yin and yang, and an old goat painting her own portrait.
Eighth across the line
In the Chinese calendar, every year bears the name of an animal. There are twelve of them, and they follow each other in a fixed order. An old legend tells that the animals earned their places in a great race. The goat came eighth. Its year begins on 6 February 2027, by the traditional reckoning a year of the fire goat.
美 měi · beautiful
Goat or sheep
The character 羊 (yáng) does not distinguish between goat and sheep. Both are meant, and both appear in this exhibition. People born in a year of the goat, such as 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 or 2015, are said to be creative, calm and to have a fine sense of beauty.
How deeply the goat is rooted in the language shows in the character 美 for “beautiful”, which has 羊 at its top. And because 羊 sounds exactly like 阳, the character for light and warmth, the old New Year greeting 三阳开泰 is often written 三羊开泰: three goats bringing luck and a good start. Two works carry this title, No. 34 and No. 35.
All works were printed in A1 format and can be seen from 16 to 30 October 2026. The exhibition shows every entry, in alphabetical order by name, with titles in German and Chinese. The numbers are the numbers on the easels.
A warm thank you to everyone who took part. You show how many faces a single animal can have.

灵
Deliberately breaks with the cliché of the purely passive, gentle animal. On the left is the chengyu 羚羊挂角 (líng yáng guà jiǎo), a symbol of absolute mastery. The title 灵 (inspiration, spirit) carries the radical for fire (火) in its lower part.

Which pictures do you like best? On the opening day, guests could tick up to twelve pictures on a ballot and drop it into the ballot box.
The twelve pictures for the 2027 wall calendar are chosen by the guests’ votes and the jury’s judgement. We will announce the result after the exhibition ends on 30 October.
